The doctrine of Hell and eternal judgment is under attack by those not willing to submit to the authority of God's Word. Under the influence of the devil false teachers everywhere are either avoiding the doctrine of hell or directly lying about it, pushing their false doctrine. The Bible is abundantly clear that hell is real and eternal punishment is prepared for the wicked. Such false doctrines include soul sleep, annihilationism, purgatory, second chance theology, and much more. Some even go as far as teaching the bible doesn’t teach hell saying it was just a garbage pit called gehenna. The bottom line is the devil knows if you know and believe in the true doctrine of eternal judgment and hell you will live a holy life in service to God. This is why he is fighting tooth and nail to pressure people to be silent on the subject. Today we will cover this topic and much more. Remember, even though these realities can be hard to face, it is much better to face them now and do something about it. Then to stick our head in the dirt like an ostrich and not be fully prepared when the time of judgment comes.
Peter tells us how we should we live? 1 Peter 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: ( 2 Peter 3:11 “Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness.” Why is Peter telling us to spend the rest of our time in fear and live holy? Because God is going to judge each person according to their works and God doesn’t show respect of persons. Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.)
The saints will be judged by their deeds Romans 2:5-13 5But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 8But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; 10But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: 11For there is no respect of persons with God. 12For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 13(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.) Psalms 135:14 reminds us that God is going to judge His people. The bible describes the righteous as people perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Picture what kind of mind you have to have in order to do this. You must believe these scriptures on judgment. False doctrine nowadays says that we will not be judged as the heathen is judged, but that is not true. God shows no respect of persons so he will judge every person in righteousness, which means very few will be saved. Because they did not believe what I’m telling you today. They would rather have a false security and a hope in a lie thinking they will somehow get away with it. But in America you have no excuse.
People will be judged according to the light given - Romans 2:12 12For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (Why will they perish if they never had the law? They will be judged according to the light they had and according to the light available to them.)
Is Soul sleep biblical?
Soul sleep is the false belief that when you die you are just asleep until the resurrection. In other words, soul sleep does not believe you are either in heaven or hell immediately after you die, but just sleeping. Even though we acknowledge the bible refers to people who are dead as people who are asleep, it doesn’t mean that they are literally asleep. It simply means they are awaiting the resurrection of the dead where their literal physical bodies will be raised. How do we know? The scriptures!
Before we start: Why would someone want to believe in soul sleep? Like all false doctrine it is meant to give a false sense of security and peace. We all know people who have died in sin, but who wants to admit they are in hell. This belief can help give temporary relief to weak minded people.
How do we know soul sleep is false?
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Luke 23:42 42And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
Philippians 1:23 23For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
The greatest account in hell / This is not a parable Luke 16:19-31 19There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. (This is saying he was buried but still in hell at the same time before the resurrection. Also, his brothers were still living on the earth which also shows that he was in hell in the current time. (It is not unjust for God to put people in hell right when they die. All because the others have not gone there yet doesn’t mean it’s unfair. No, hell is the holding tank before the lake of fire. Proverbs 7:27 “Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.”)
The great white throne judgment proves soul sleep is false Revelation 20:11-15 11And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (This passage is proof there is no soul sleep. Because hell delivered up the dead which was in them. According to soul sleep noone is in hell but we see this is not true. Also, it talks about whosoever names were not written in the lambs book of life proving that these are humans, not angels, being judged after spending time in hell.)
Who is the one on the great white throne judging the people? I used to think it was the Father because it says “Him that sat on it from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away” and I saw the dead, small and great stand before God.” But after a closer look at the scriptures I have come to the conclusion that it is Christ. For one, Christ is God. Second, Isaiah 53 says “we hid as it were our faces from him”.
More evidence it is Jesus Judging! All judgment hath been committed to the Son John 5:21-30 21For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. 22For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: 23That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. 24Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. 30I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. (Romans 2:16 “In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.” It makes sense it is Jesus that will judge because it is him that will purify the earth during the 1000 years before He presents the world to the Father!)
What is second chance theology and why is it wrong? Believers of this false doctrine believe Jesus descended into hell after his death on the cross, preached the Gospel to the dead and gave them second chances to believe in him and be saved. So they believe there is a second chance to get saved after death. The belief of second chance is closely tied to the false doctrine of purgatory. They use the verse in 1 Peter 3:18-20 as a proof text. Let’s look:
1 Peter 3:18-20 18For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. (So, to say this is talking about preaching to people in hell is bad exegesis. They are adding to the text in order to get that. 1 Peter 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
So in both of these verses it is talking about Christ preaching and prophesying through men in the old testament. It has nothing to do with preaching to people in hell. If people had a second chance to get out of hell then everyone in hell would get saved. No, in 1 Peter 3:18-20 he is clearly talking about Christ preaching in the days of Noah. Old Testament saints were not in hell or purgatory. They were resting in peace in Abraham’s Bosom . (1 Samuel 28:15 “And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up?” You see, when Samuel was brought up from the dead he was not in hell. He was at peace.)
So there are three false doctrines that people wrongly take from 1 Peter 3:18-20. Second chance, purgatory, and the old testament saints were not born again in the old testament and didn’t have the Holy Spirit.
What is Annihilation and why isn’t it biblical?
Define annihilation - complete destruction or obliteration.
The Belief of annihilation in theology is the false belief people that go to hell will not suffer, instead they will be utterly destroyed and cease to exist. In other words people that believe in annihilation are denying the truth of eternal conscious torment in hell. But what does scripture teach?
Jesus testifies of Hell Mark 9:42-46 42And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. 43And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 45And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 46Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 47And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: 48Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Everyone that doesn’t bear good fruit will be cast into the fire Matthew 3:10-12 10And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 12Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Suffering the vengeance of Eternal Fire 5I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. 6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
The smoke of their torment ascends forever Revelation 14:9-13 9And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. 12Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. 13And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Jesus Teaches about Eternal life and Eternal Damnation Matthew 25:14-46 14For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. 15And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. 16Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. 17And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. 18But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. 19After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. 20And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. 21His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 22He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. 23His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 24Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: 25And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. 26His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: 27Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. 28Take therefore the talent from him, and give itunto him which hath ten talents. 29For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. 30And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 31When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 32And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
The Parable of the Weeds Matthew 13:24-30 24Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: 25But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. 26But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 27So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? 28He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? 29But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. 30Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
Parable of the Weeds Explained Matthew 13:36-43 36Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. 37He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 40As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. 41The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
The Parable of the Banquet Matthew 22:1-14 1And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said, 2The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, 3And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. 4Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. 5But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: 6And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. 7But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. 8Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. 9Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. 10So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. 11And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: 12And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. 13Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 14For many are called, but few are chosen.
